Spotify has announced a US playlisting initiative in celebration of Juneteenth and Black Music Month.
What’s happening: In the US, Spotify’s flagship playlist “New Music Friday” will exclusively feature Black artists on Friday, June 19th (with the takeover remaining active through June 26th). Additionally, Spotify’s New Music Friday billboards in Times Square, New York will be dedicated only to Black artists on June 19th.
Why this is happening: Spotify’s team of curators intend to encourage music fans to discover, celebrate and elevate the creative contributions of Black artists, who have defined and inspired music for generations across all genres. The all-Black artist takeover of NMF will feature music across various genres to reflect this as well.
How this affects the overall playlisting process: It doesn’t – pitching tools and editorial review remain the same for all June 19th releases. But for releases that do not feature Black artists, Spotify will consider them for other key playlists in the Spotify ecosystem in the US.
